Recently, we here at the Ada Initiative found an awesome web comic, 2D Goggles: The Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage by computer animator Sydney Padua. The first episode is “Ada Lovelace – The Origin!“, describing Ada Lovelace’s life in the style of a superhero origin story. First page:
The rest of 2D Goggles follows the adventures of Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage in an alternate universe in which they build computers in the 1830′s and use them to fight crime (or what they consider crime – poetry and street music, respectively).
The neat thing about 2D Goggles is that it isn’t just “vaguely inspired by” stylized steampunk nonsense, it’s geeky, witty, and incredibly well-researched stylized steampunk nonsense that plumbs the exciting and weird lives of bleeding-edge Industrial Revolution rock stars. Sydney posts the comic and all the cool things she learned while researching it, with links to her sources. My favorite story so far is about Charles Babbage out driving his experimental train one night, and nearly colliding with another train, driven by world-famous engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who shrugged it off. That was the 1830′s for you!
